How Much to Fix It?

Information about auto repair and preventive maintenance

National Car Care Month

This is not a new topic of conversation for us, but in honor of National Car Care Month, we feel it is appropriate to revisit the importance of preventative maintenance on your vehicles.  We don’t just talk about how vital it is, we actually practice it on our own automobiles.  This is evidenced by our company vehicle, a 2004 Honda Mile-Marker-ImageOdyssey which just turned over 200,000 miles this month and shows no signs of slowing down.

Keeping up on regularly scheduled maintenance will ensure not only the longevity of your vehicle and its safety, but will also prevent you from having to shell out extra money on costly repairs due to neglect.  Vehicles that have been neglected almost always mean much higher costs due to extensive repairs or lost resale value.  These extra costs can easily be prevented just by following basic maintenance guidelines.

We have listed here the top 10 things we recommend you do on a regular basis to keep you vehicle up to par.  You can check out our website for a complete recommended service interval schedule.

  • Check the oil, filters and fluids and replace as needed
  • Inspect hoses at each oil change and replace any cracked, brittle, rusted swollen or restriced hoses.
  • Check the engine brake system once a year and inspect the brakes at each oil change.
  • Check the battery for any loose connections and make sure it is clean, tight and corrosion free.
  • Inspect the exhaust system if there are any unusual noises for leaks, damage or broken supports.
  • Having a tune-up will ensure the engine is delivering the best power and offering the best fuel economy.
  • Inspect the heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
  • Check the steering and suspension system once a year, including shock absorbers, struts, and chassis parts.
  • Check the air pressure and tread in the tires, at least once a month.  Also have the alignment checked once a year.
  • Test exterior and interior lights about every 6 months and replace any bulbs that are not working properly.  It’s also a good time to replace windshield wiper blades as well during this time.

We would love to see you drive your own vehicles past the 200,000 mile mark as well.  Driving your vehicle for even 3 years past the time you pay it off can save you $20,000 – $30,000.  Take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you.
