Cooling Down Your Cooling System

AAA states that cooling system failures are one of the leading causes of vehicle breakdowns on the highway. There are many culprits for this problem, but all can usually be attributed to not having preventative maintenance or cooling system flushes done regularly as stated in your owner’s manual. Your car’s coolant degrades over time which

causes rust and scale deposits to build up in the cooling system.

Overheating is a common problem for many drivers because they failed to have their cooling system checked for leaks or other minor issues which can turn into major repairs – and that means money. When cooling system failures do occur, they can result in very expensive repairs.  Discovering a leaking radiator, hose connection, a sticking thermostat or other cooling system component that’s on “borrowed time” can save the life of one’s engine. Our technicians understand the severity of cooling system neglect and we often encourage our customers to monitor the system and allow us to check for minor repairs, leaks or cracks. These minor issues can turn into an on-going source of problems especially because once corrosion takes place, the damage is difficult to repair and can often turn into expensive replacements.

Neglecting your cooling system can be dangerous, but like we mentioned above, it can become very expensive, very fast. The damage to your transmission and your engine can add up to thousands and thousands of dollars. You see, the coolant flows through your radiator, water pump, water hoses and through internal engine passages to keep the engine operating at the proper temperature. When your coolant level becomes drastically low or becomes too dirty from aging, it can cause your engine to overheat. And when today’s engines overheat, it can mean a literal meltdown and extremely expensive repairs.

Some repair shops recommend conventional “drain and refill” coolant services which actually replace less than 50% of the coolant and they do not inspect the entire cooling system for leaks, cracks or clogging. Although there are some disparities among experts, a radiator flush provides a number of benefits to your car’s cooling system and is a necessary step in ridding your radiator of scale and dirt. Following your vehicle’s manual for service intervals, you can protect your system, but our automotive technicians will inspect the entire system as we perform your coolant flush.
